The Heat, Hugh and You

One of the truly magnificent things about August in St. Louis is that by his point you're either accustomed to the heat or you're dead — there is no middle ground. Those still among the very sweaty living are invited to celebrate their good fortune with the Compton Heights Concert Band. The CHCB performs shows that hearken back to the old days of big-band music when John Philip Sousa was king, the gazebo in the park was the place to be, and admission was free. The Compton Heights Concert Band is joined by special guest Hugh Smith (tenor and crowd favorite) at 7:30 p.m. in Tower Grove Park (4256 Magnolia Avenue; 314-776-2227 or www.chband.org). Admission is free.
