Take Yourself Out

Unless you've memorized the Cardinals home schedule — and let's face it, there's a good chance you have — you may not realize why today's 1:15 p.m. game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Busch Stadium (Broadway and Poplar Street; 314-421-3060 or www.stlcardinals.com) is important. This is the second-to-last "businessman's lunch" game of the season. These are the most valuable games of the season from a fan's point of view. Bail out on work to get your tires rotated on a Wednesday afternoon and you're a shirker; ditch the office for the ballpark on that same Wednesday and you're a loyal St. Louisan, part of a long tradition of slacking off that stretches back to the Gas House Gang. Those TPS reports can wait. Set your voicemail to bounce all calls to the phone at the empty cubicle. Or go full-on sneaky and buy a second seat in the nosebleeds and then casually offer it to your boss — and tell her you'll front the first round as well. Tickets are $19 to $127.
