Feel the Disaster

Before VHS, DVD or Blu-Ray, home theater enthusiasts turned to Super-8 films, which provided cinema connoisseurs condensed editions (about fifteen minutes) of their favorite theatrical releases. No film genre is better suited to this kind of slash-and-burn editing than the disaster film, where the running time is padded to an insufferable length to introduce a laundry list of B-list actors before the calamity ensues. Tonight Super-8 Movie Madness promises to level the Way Out Club (2525 South Jefferson Avenue; www.myspace.com/wayoutclub) as never before with a themed "Disaster Night" that delivers money shots of mass mayhem. Disaster movie icon Charlton Heston saves the day in Earthquake and Midway, two films originally presented in Sensurround, an enhanced audio experience that resulted in record ticket sales, theater damage and nauseous patrons before its discontinuation in 1979. For this special event, local audio engineers have been enlisted to recreate the sound and feel of Sensurround for these two films, as well as The Poseidon Adventure, which will be presented in Sensurround for the first time ever. Other Super-8 films screening include Meteor and The Towering Inferno. The beginning of the end starts at 8 p.m., and admission is only $3.
