Make Musical Memories

As adults, we tend to underestimate kids. We think that we know better about everything (we don't) and that we understand culture, life and love better (we really don't, at least not all of the time). Fortunately for the little ones, the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra gives them the credit they're due by offering a handful of hourlong concerts throughout the performing season aimed directly at them. The Family Concerts feature familiar music in the beautiful confines of Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard) — a space so grand, it makes the experience even more memorable. The first installment in the series, happening at 3 p.m., brings The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky and The Firebird suite by Stravinsky to life. Little ballerinas in the audience are likely to recognize The Nutcracker — symphonic music seems to really stick with kids, plus dancers from Ballet Initiative will perform — and The Firebird is just as unforgettable. Tickets for this afternoon of sweet music cost $6 to $15; call 314-534-1700 or visit www.slso.org to make a purchase.
