Carpe Cake

Life is tough. You get old, your back hurts, kids don't respect you, etc., etc. — and then you find yourself staring down a paper plate with a piece of cake on it, and suddenly you're a kid again. What is the magic ingredient in cake that transforms you back to that younger, giddier version of yourself? Delicious cake is a fine example of the alchemist's art; eggs, flour, whatever else makes cake, these mundane elements go into the oven and come out transmuted into something magical. Cake artisan Kerry Soraci considerably ups the ante on that alchemy, crafting her dessert art from the finest organic ingredients, and then applying her own creative skills and sense of humor to the finished project. Here's a ready-to-hang deer's head mounted on a plaque; there's a leering devil urging you to take a bigger, more sinful bite of life. From 10 p.m. to midnight tonight at Iron Age Studio (6309 Delmar Boulevard, University City; www.ironagestudio.com), Soraci hosts an I Scream Cake Tasting. Admission is $7, which gets you some cake samples, the chance to win one of Soraci's art cakes and the opportunity to see her designs — and all the youthful, cake-fueled glee you can handle.
