Bottom's Up

In the old days, St. Louisans would spend the night in Forest Park when the summer heat became unbearable. That escape is forbidden now, but you can still enjoy a pleasant Midsummer Night outdoors at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts (3716 Washington Boulevard; 314-754-1850 or www.pulitzerarts.org). At 7 p.m., the actors of the Staging Old Masters program perform scenes based on their interpretations of the Old Masters paintings currently on display at the Pulitzer. At 9 p.m., Max Reinhardt’s 1935 film adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is projected in the cool confines of the Pulitzer’s courtyard. Reinhardt’s film is a veritable who’s who of Hollywood’s Golden Age, with a young Mickey Rooney as trouble-making Puck and James Cagney as Bottom the Weaver. As with all good summer escapes, admission is free.
