Well, another St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase is in the books. Maybe you saw everything you wanted to see, maybe you didn't. The fact remains that every movie was seen by somebody — by many somebodies, actually. And while it's nice to claim "art for art's sake," it's nicer as a creator to know that something you made, something you expended a great deal of time and effort to bring to fruition, actually had an audience. There were times during the creative process when the concept of the film ever being finished seemed out of the question, let alone the possibility that some stranger might see it and enjoy it. But the films got done, and they were seen. So at this evening's Closing-Night Awards Party from 8 p.m. to midnight at Blueberry Hill's Duck Room (6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City; www.cinemastlouis.org or 314-289-4150), there will be many whoops of relief and joy from people who can rightly call themselves "filmmakers." And some of them will get even more good news, as the films chosen to be included in the St. Louis International Film Festival will be announced, and awards will be handed out to the films anointed as best in their class by the St. Louis Film Critics. Plus, you know, partying and such will take place. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully appreciated and will be put to good use in future filmic pursuits.
