Style, the Affordable Way

Alas, Ms. Day's prom days are long gone — fortunately, she still doesn't look a day over eighteen, if she does write so herself — but her dress-up days certainly aren't over. In fact, she keeps quite a busy schedule of gala attendance where all manner of fanciness is required. How does she do it on a writer's pay? Why, she shops the sales and keeps her eye out for special events like Dress for a Cause, happening from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 4, at the St. Louis Community College-Wildwood campus (2645 Generations Drive). At this dress sale, gently used formal dresses are being sold for $20 each — and the proceeds benefit ALIVE, a domestic-violence agency for women and children. Ms. Day imagines that she'll be able to find a few frocks for herself, and that all of the ladies looking for prom dresses will find something cute and stylish as well.
