Gettin' Fresh

The market is open!

Your inner locavore remained tightlipped during the winter months every time you set out to forage for good stuff but somehow wound up back at home with your head lowered in shame and a bag o' salad and a frozen pizza in your hand. But now this voice is being more demanding. It's shouting, "Fresh fruit! Fresh veggies! Organic! Locally grown!" So fulfill all of the above at the opening weekend of the Clayton Farmers' Market. From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24 (and every Saturday through October 25), the west parking lot of Straub's (8282 Forsyth Boulevard, Clayton; 314-398-9729) will be the place to find a prodigious variety of recently picked produce, baked goods and crafts. During its eighth year, the market will host more vendors than ever before, including Blues Hog Barbecue Company, Silent Oaks Farm and Mandy's Candies. In addition, the Iron Chef competition gets under way with round one: L'École Culinaire chefs Darren Garmer and Jeff Reidel duke it out to reveal who's the true master of outdoor cooking.
