Choppers over Fenton

What weighs seven pounds and zips past your head at ninety miles per hour? One might imagine giant, trained mosquitoes, which seem to be indigenous to Missouri backyards this time of year. But, no -- fleshy humans take heart -- it's merely the choppers of the St. Louis Whirlybirds Radio Controlled Helicopter Club's 23rd Annual Fun Fly! This Saturday and Sunday (June 2 and 3) from 9 a.m. until the sun disappears, Buder Park North (1919 Valley Park Road, Fenton) hosts the tiniest air show in the state, as the wee helicopters perform feats of aerial derring-do at the behest of their ground-based pilots. Seating and the all-important concession stand are provided, and the pleasant folks from the Whirlybirds raffle off a genuine RC helicopter for your home. The event is free, but expect to pay a landing fee ($20) if you're piloting. All of the details (and photos of choppers in action) are available at www.stlouiswhirlybirds.com.
