Bags and Wags

Our neighborhoods are made up of as many different types of dogs as there are people. There are fancy standard poodles, smart and sassy with their stylish 'dos; timid purse puppies, afraid of the world yet ever-curious; casual mutts, friendly, undemanding and up for anything; and rowdy dogs, the kind that run hard and play harder. Of course, even a pack this diverse has commonalities, beyond butt-sniffing and other doggish habits — in fact, many of these pups are appreciating a second chance at life because of ever-important organizations like the Humane Society of Missouri. You can lend a helping paw, er, hand to the nonprofit this evening, and have a chance at improving your style at the same time, during Purses for Pooches & Pals. At this fundraiser, held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Humane Society (1201 Macklind Avenue), you can lap up wine and beer and nibble on gourmet human-style kibble from eateries including Mike Shannon's Steaks & Seafood, Villa Farotto and Lancia Frozen Yogurt. Your full stomach will help you when deciding which designer purses (brands include Gucci and Louis Vuitton) and shoes (we're talking Via Spiga and Sam Edelman) you would like to try for in the raffle. Admission to the event costs $40, and raffle tickets cost $35 apiece (or less if you purchase them along with your event registration); learn more and save your spot by visiting www.hsmo.org/purses.
