The funny name stems from the restaurant/coffeehouse/bar/fresh-seafood market's location in the WireWorks project, a loft-apartment and retail redevelopment in the old Western Wire Manufacturing buildings east of Lafayette Park. Bethany Budde owns SqWires, Rick Hastey manages it and Candace Coleman manages the market. Other openings: The Maya Café, featuring Latin influences, has debuted at 2726 Sutton Ave., adjacent to the Focal Point Traditional Arts Center, with Jay Schober at the helm; and the once-exurban retreat the Pond Inn has traded in its old "Relais de Campagne" tagline for "Maison de Vin" (I'd have gone with "Maison du Vin," but qu'est-ce que je sais?) and reopened at 17250 Manchester Rd. in Wildwood, 636-405-0500. Let's hope the current owners don't continue the Pond Inn tradition of yelling at or sending nasty letters to patrons who are late for reservations or complain about the food or service. Ahh, the good old days.
