Artist Appreciation

The artist Mark Rothko is having a rough go of it. He has to simultaneously finish a commission for the Four Seasons and break in a new assistant, Ken. Part of the breaking-in process requires Ken to learn how to deal with and appreciate the tempestuous painter; this is a man who believes above all else that every one of his own brush strokes are fraught with tragedy. But Ken is not afraid to spar with the master; how tragic can a painting be when it's destined to become decor at a luxury hotel? John Logan's Tony-winning drama Red explores the big topics of great art and immortality, but it also reveals the complex humanity of the man trying to achieve both. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis opens its new season with Red at 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, at the Loretto-Hilton Center (130 Edgar Road; 314-968-4925 or Tickets are $19 to $72, and the show is performed every day except Monday through Sunday, October 2.
