Pomegranates

8:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 18. The Firebird, 2706 Olive Street.

Cincinnati's Pomegranates has a style that leaves you grasping at terms that don't quite fit. If it were any brighter, it would be indie pop, any heavier, and you'd call it shoegaze, any more stark, and bedroom pop would be accurate. By turns the young band wears each of these robes, creating a dynamism that's engaging far beyond the repetitious shimmer and haze of its peers. The band's most recent full-length, One of Us, ranges from urgently droning anthems ("'50s") to whispering, piano-soaked reflections ("Between Two Dreams") to monochrome, reverb-slathered takes on New Radicals-esque buoyancy ("The Positive Light").

Antioxidant Power: Unlike the fruit of the same name, Pomegranates will not neutralize free radicals. It will leave you feeling healthy and refreshed, though.
