The Art of the Rescue

Urban Wanderers is an exhibition that spotlights professional works of art inspired by abused or abandoned animals taken in by the saintly folks of Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Artists sculpt, paint or photograph a Stray Rescue dog or cat who's been mistreated or disposed of like unwanted furniture, and shelter dogs will create their very own works of "arf" using their paws, tails and noses. (Say what you will about Vermeer, Turner, Cezanne, Klimt, Klee or Motherwell -- all geniuses, sure, but not a big shot in the bunch ever used his nose to paint with.) This year marks the fourth installment of the show, and the theme is "The Plight of the Street Dog." Urban Wanderers opens with a free public reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art (3663 Lindell Boulevard; 314-977-2666 or www.sluma.slu.edu). All funds raised by the online auction of the art/arf pieces directly benefit Stray Rescue of St. Louis. The show remains up through Sunday, May 5, and the gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: March 22. Continues through May 5, 2013
