The idea behind our first MasterMind Awards was simple enough: What if Riverfront Times highlighted the work of a few rising stars in the St. Louis art scene and rewarded the artists with a check for $1,000, no strings attached?
Six years later and it's clear that our idea has caught hold. Over the past two months RFT readers submitted more than 50 worthy candidates for this year's awards, and previous MasterMind winners provided us with even more nominees. After reviewing all the nominations two things are clear: The creative community is alive and well in St. Louis, and choosing a winner from such a strong group of candidates is no easy task. That said, we are proud to present the 2013 MasterMind Awards to the following four artists whose varied interests represent perhaps our most diverse class of MasterMinds yet:
Matt Bryan, cartoonist
Jennifer Tappenden, poet and publisher
Suki Peters, actor and director
Damon Davis, visual artist, music producer and fashion designer
Please join us in congratulating them at Riverfront Times' Artopia gala on Thursday, August 29, from 7 to 11 p.m. at 2720 Cherokee. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased via our website at www.riverfronttimes.com/Artopia.
