Wake Up

In rural nineteenth century Germany, smart young men are perceived as troublemakers by authority figures, and Melchior is perhaps too smart for his own good. A model student and loyal friend, Melchior writes a treatise on human sexuality for his sexually-confused pal, Moritz. Some of that experience was learned in the fields with Wendla, a young woman who also questions the rules and the old ways. When Frank Wedekind wrote this tale of sexual curiosity and rebellion, the subject matter was too hot for the 1880s. But Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik saw Spring Awakening as a thoroughly modern tale that would make for a bang-up rock & roll musical. The Washington University Performing Arts Department presents Spring Awakening at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (October 25 through November 3) at the Edison Theatre on the Washington University Campus (6445 Forsyth Boulevard; 314-935-6543 or www.edisontheatre.wustl.edu).
