Free Skate

Grab your helmet, tighten your wheels and spend a day popping ollies in St. Charles with fellow skateboarders -- or at least look cool on the sidelines while you watch everyone else. Today is national Go Skateboarding Day, and once again St. Charles opens its Youth Activity Park (7801 Highway N, St. Charles; 636-561-4964 or www.stccparks.org), which boasts 33,000 square feet of concrete to skaters, rollerbladers, BMX bikers and scooter pushers. Starting at noon extreme-sport enthusiasts can improve their skills, watch demonstrations, score some free swag and take part in various skill competitions. And one lucky person will go home with an autographed photo of Tony Hawk, which is the day's big attendance prize. Admission to the park is free to all.
