July 4th Violence In St. Louis: Four Shootings, Suspects Throw Fireworks At Guards

Fireworks exploded in St. Louis last night -- and shots were fired.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, there were a total of four separate shooting incidents in the city yesterday as well as an assault on a group of security guards -- in which suspects apparently threw fireworks at the officers.

There were no fatal incidents, but there were a series of injuries across the city. In one case, a victim told police he didn't even realize he was shot until he woke up the next day.

In the incident involving security guards, around three unknown suspects allegedly stopped their vehicle near an apartment complex on the 3400 block of Hamilton Avenue in north St. Louis and "began firing fireworks at the security guards," cops say.

The guards walked over to the vehicle to investigate, cops say, prompting the suspects to drive away -- but not before hitting one of the guards with the car. The driver accelerated the vehicle again in an attempt to "throw the victim off of the vehicle and in doing so, they struck a parked car."

The male guard, who suffered a leg injury, then fired back, fearing for his life, police say.

The vehicle fled again, down an embankment, and this time struck a building, "throwing the guard off against the brick wall."

Another guard then fired his weapon, trying to stop the vehicle, police say. A 28-year-old male in the car was hit in the face and taken to the hospital in serious, stable condition. The guard who was struck was also taken to the hospital in serious, but stable condition.

The other suspects fled from the car and remain at large, police say.

Meanwhile, in one of the more bizarre Fourth of July incidents locally, a 33-year-old male at around 1:30 a.m. this morning, pulled over on the 8800 block of North Broadway to urinate in an alley, police say. As he left his car, he reportedly heard a loud sound nearby, which he thought was a firework.

He drove home.

But when he woke up the next morning, he realized he had been shot in the leg and thus went to the hospital, cops say. The suspects in this case are, unsurprisingly, unknown.

At the 4500 block of Elmbank, at around 12:25 a.m., in a separate shooting incident, an eighteen-year-old male threatened a nineteen-year-old male with a gun and demanded his money and belongings.

As the victim was walking away, the suspect fired multiple shots at him, police say. He went to the hospital and was in serious, but stable condition. The suspect was entered as "wanted."

A third shooting happened in the morning at the 800 block of River Run Ct. involving a drug sale turned violent.

And a fourth shooting was a drive-by incident that took place at the 4900 block of Farlin Avenue. In this case, the victim was hit in the right thigh -- but refused to cooperate with investigators, police say.

Here are the SLMPD incident reports from last night.
