St. Louis Tenth in the Nation for Volunteering, Survey Sayz

A new survey by Volunteering in America ranks St. Louis as the tenth most generous city in America when it comes to donating our time to serve others and the community.

The survey, said to be the most comprehensive data ever assembled on nationwide volunteer trends and demographics, found that 31 percent of St. Louisans have volunteered in some capacity in each of the past three years. All told more than 692,000 people volunteered in St. Louis during those years for an average of 37.6 hours of service work per resident.

The findings have already prompted a response from Mayor Francis Slay who in a press release today, stated: "This report is a testament to the success of service in St. Louis. We've known for a long time that St. Louisans are very generous with their time, their money, and their talents. I'm proud that our generosity tops this list - and I encourage everyone to continue their volunteerism. Your service is making our city a better place to live."

Across the state, Kansas City ranked No. 7 with 32 percent of its residents volunteering.

VIA ranked Missouri as No. 26 compared to all other states. Not good, but, hey, it's better than Tennessee that came in at No. 32 and has the audacity to call itself the "Volunteer State."
