David Carruthers was known for bringing the brains to the BETonSPORTS operation. His feet are fast, too.
But not from keeping his feet fleet.
According to a court document filed Sunday, Carruthers has taken advantage of his free time these last three years by reviving an erstwhile interest in running.
Via his blog, Carruthers has kept family and friends up to speed on his training schedule, not to mention road races he's been allowed to compete in.
Last year, for example, the Scotsman got permission from U.S. District Judge Carol Jackson to run the St. Jude Memphis Marathon. (He finished in 105th place, clocking a time of three hours and seven minutes.)
Now Carruthers wants to run a marathon in San Antonio, Texas, on November 15. (The filing also notes he'd planned to do it to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.)
Carruthers this past spring pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering for his role in running the offshore Internet gambling business. He awaits sentencing and faces no more than 33 months in prison, under a special deal struck with federal prosecutors.
According to a court filing, Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Holtshouser did not object to Carruthers running in the San Antonio race, despite the fact that he'd need to reclaim his confiscated passport in order to travel to Texas. (Carruthers is not a U.S. citizen.)
Carruthers' attorney on Sunday asked Jackson to let him fly to Texas for the race. Yesterday Jackson denied the request without explanation.
