Police stated at a 5 p.m. press conference this evening that at this time, they do not consider Mitchell Murch II a suspect in the
death of his wife, Catherine, and two children, Mitchell and Mary Claire. Police questioned him on Monday, and have not spoken with him about what happened since then. He was cooperative throughout the process, according to the police.
Investigators further stated that they received two 911 calls from Mitchell Murch on Monday morning; the first came when he heard gunshots, and the second came minutes later when he discovered the bodies of his family.
The Major Case Squad is now waiting for autopsies and lab reports from the crime scene in the hopes that such forensic evidence will give them a better understanding of what happened in the house that morning.
Lt. Tim Fagan of the Florissant Police department, who is leading the Major Case Squad investigation, said, "There is still much work to do and we intend to investigate this until we get a clear understanding of what happened." For right now, the incident is being considered a murder-suicide, and it continues to be investigated as such. No motive has been disclosed at this time.
