Tonight! Eli "Paperboy" Reed vs. the Pink Spiders

It feels like a Saturday night here in the city, what with all of the great national bands playing in town tonight (and the fact that I stayed out far too late for a Monday night at the awesome Dead Confederate show everyone else in town should also have been at). Strident, Pretenders-echoing rockers Heartless Bastards and dirt-twang outfit Langhorne Slim -- who's making STL a home away from home lately -- are at the Duck Room, while stoner kids Awesome Color (with Intelligence and local Skarekrau Radio opening) are at the Billiken Club. Both of those shows start at 9 p.m...

... as does the Pink Spiders show at the Bluebird. These Nashville power-poppers were fantastic live when I saw them at Warped Tour this year, a solid, garage-y outfit. The band's playing at Vintage Vinyl at 6 p.m. too. Here's a stream of a new MP3.

Eli "Paperboy" Reed is at Off Broadway at 9 p.m. with the Dogtown Allstars. I heard some of his set at Lollapalooza, and it was fabulous. But I'll let this press from his MySpace describe him better:

"The truth is in the grooves ... [Reed's song 'The Satisfier'] is the sound that's bulldozed the skeptics - dirty guitar, in-the-pocket rhythm section, goosy organ, rocking call-and-response horns, and backing vocals that out-Ronson Mark Ronson." - BOSTON PHOENIX

"[Reed's] blazing soul get[s] the pulse racing and the spirit testifying. The brilliantly nicknamed singer combines the sob of Al Green with the beef of Otis Redding, and boasts a band, The True Loves, who look young enough to be in some emo group but have better taste." - MOJO MAGAZINE
