Downtown's long wait is over: Hi-Pointe Drive-In (634 Washington Avenue, 314-405-8274) opens its doors on Wash Ave for the first time today at 11 a.m. And it promises to be out of this world.

This Hi-Pointe, which is moving into the old Porano Pasta space, will be the second (restaurateur Mike Johnson, best known as the genius behind Sugarfire Smoke House, opened the first on McCausland in December 2016). At 3,600 square feet, it'll be bigger than its sister, with room to seat 100. That includes the 30 seats outside in the covered patio.

Fans of the original location know to expect smashed diner-style burgers on toasted potato rolls, Belgian-style fries and milkshakes — boozy, if you'd like. (We would!) But Hi-Pointe is promising much more than that, with a "a sleeker aesthetic that further highlights the brand’s space-like theme and nod to the extraterrestrial."

As for food, in addition to the standards, Johnson and partner Charlie Downs are offering a meat-free Impossible burger; a "T.L.T." with house-made tofu bacon; Hi-Pointe's beloved taco burger, which incorporates sauce from Mission Taco Joint; and new additions including a Cuban, sweet potato tots, onion rings and a Cuban. There's also a full roster of desserts that include both cookies and whoopie pies.

Oh, and the space also features this cool mural, by St. Louis artist Jason Spencer (better known as Killer Napkins) and Top Coat Signs. Not content to take over St. Louis, Spencer is apparently colonizing space, too.

The downtown location will be open Monday thru Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Maybe stop by and see what all the fuss is about. Just watch out for the aliens.
