A Happening Happening

Artists, DJs, murals and you

If'n you're looking for an exciting first date that will make you look both cool and fun-loving to whomever you're squiring about this evening, look no further than New Work by Ron Buechele, Jim Mahfood and Peat Wollaeger. This art exhibit with a little something extra features new work by the three artists of the wordy-yet-functional title. Buechele's paintings match retro commercial-art imagery with sardonic text to explore the strange border areas of modern life. Mahfood, who also works under the name FOOD ONE, throws comic-book aesthetics into his graffiti-style murals to create art that embodies his love of hip-hop and Spiderman. And even if you don't know it, you've probably seen Wollaeger's stencil-art somewhere — maybe on a Mountain Dew bottle last year or at the City Museum? The show opens with a free public reception from 7 to 11 p.m. on Friday, November 7, at the Mad Art Gallery (2727 South 12th Street; 314-771-8230 or In addition to the delights of the cash bar, DJ Mahf (younger, and some say, handsomer brother to Jim) provides the soundtrack of your life while Mahfood the Elder and Wollaeger rock live-art murals. The show remains up through Tuesday, December 2, and regular gallery hours are by appointment Tuesday through Saturday.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Nov. 7. Continues through Dec. 2, 2008
