A Hermann German Christmas

What sounds better than getting out of the city for a little while on an easy day trip? Not much. If you're of like mind, pile in your vehicle of choice and head to Hermann, out in bucolic Missouri wine country. Hermann provides a lot of fun and low-key relaxation any time of year but at Christmas it really turns on the charm. Take in the town's annual Kristkindl Markt at Hermann Mill and Festhalle (315 East First Street, Hermann; 573-486-3276 or www.hermannfarm.com) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m Saturday and Sunday (December 7 and 8). The festival features authentic German foods, drinks, crafts, clothing, candles and -- of course! -- wine. Considering the cost of entry (free) and the host town's proximity to the metro St. Louis area, this is a seasonal opportunity not to be missed.
