A Raft of Adventures

Feb 24, 2010 at 4:00 am
It's a big year for fans of that deep-down American genius and native Missourian Samuel Langhorne Clemens. The man better known as Mark Twain was born November 30, 1835, and died on April 21, 1910; by gubernatorial proclamation here in Missouri, 2010 is the Year of Twain, commemorating both the 175th anniversary of his birth and the centenary of his passing. The Big Read Festival honors him (and his endearingly bratty creation Tom Sawyer) as well — with an ice cream social and raft building contest today at the Foundry Art Centre (520 North Main Center, St. Charles; 636-255-0270 or www.foundryartcentre.org). Raft building materials are supplied, and prizes will be awarded for the best vessels. Complimentary copies of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer will be distributed, and there'll be a discussion of the book. The free event runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
