Women love a man in uniform, but Marie loves an entire regiment. A foundling adopted by a jaunty French company, Marie now supports her troop as a canteen girl and mascot. She has a special love for Tonio, who sadly is not a member of the coterie — that's a problem, because Marie is only allowed to wed a man who belongs to the regiment. Compounding her problem is the Marquise, a noblewoman who claims to be her long-lost aunt and now wants to rehabilitate her rough and mannish ways, the better to marry her off to a wealthy peer. What's a poor tomboy to do? Union Avenue Opera performs Gaetano Donizetti's comic opera La Fille Du Regiment at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (July 30 through August 7), with one 3 p.m. show on Sunday, August 8, at Union Avenue Christian Church (733 North Union Boulevard; 314-361-2881 or www.unionavenueopera.org). Tickets are $30 to $52.
Fridays, Saturdays; Sun., Aug. 8. Starts: July 30. Continues through Aug. 7, 2010
