All Action, No Bull

You can keep your X-Games and Mountain Dew, because no amount of artificial hype is ever going to generate a sport as extreme as bull riding. A man sets himself on the back of a bull that tips the scales at 1,500 pounds. The bull, for his part, is then free to try to throw the cowboy off by spinning, bucking and jumping — the cowboy is allowed a single hand grip, by the way. The goal is for the rider to stay on for eight seconds. And whether he succeeds or doesn't, he still has to avoid the irritated beast once he's back on the dirt. It's a pretty straightforward scenario, but that's the appeal. Come get a taste at 2 p.m. today at Rodeo Gigante at the Family Arena (2002 Arena Parkway, St. Charles; 636-896-4200 or www.familyarena.com). The Los Compadres Mariachi Band provides a live soundtrack for the afternoon, and tickets are just $28.
