All Eyes on the Butterfly House

The Butterfly House (15193 Olive Boulevard, Chesterfield; 636-530-0076 or regularly enchants visitors with nearly 100 different blossoming plant species and more than 60 species of dainty, fluttering butterflies, all of which happily coexist in the balmy temperatures of the glass conservatory. But, of course, the plants and the insects don't merely coexist — they hang out with a fair amount of regularity (as you might imagine), you know, to celebrate holidays and the like. While living things, such as these, do appreciate a good Earth Day (natch), Halloween might be their favorite holiday of all, and it's easy to understand why, seeing as how the entire month of October brings all kinds of eye-catching fun to the House. During October Owls & Orchids, an additional 1,850 or so owl butterflies — they're the ones with the realistic owl-eye camouflage markings on their wings — flit about (up from 150 any other month) and almost 100 orchids come out to share their mysterious splendor and their difficult-to-maintain (well, for us anyway) blooms. If all that isn't worth a few hoots, we don't know what is! And to really make things interesting, the Butterfly House stays open late on Tuesdays throughout the spookiest of all months, so that you, dear visitor, can check out the owl butterflies at dusk when they are quite active. You have no excuse not to join this party! The Butterfly House is open every day except Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays (October 5, 12, 19 and 26); admission is $4 to $6, which includes a coupon for a free Chick-fil-A sandwich for the Tuesday-night visitors.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 5. Continues through Oct. 31, 2010
