Pipa, lute and you

May 7, 2008 at 4:00 am
For its final concert of the season, the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society presents a pair of proficient plucking prodigies: China’s Gao Hong and India’s Shubhendra Rao. Gao is recognized as a world-class master of the pipa, China’s traditional pear-shaped lute, while Shubhendra Rao is an ace on India’s long, hollow-necked sitar. In both duo and solo performances, the two promise to take audiences way out — to an ethereal world populated by multi-cultural tones, dynamic textures and dazzling technique. The Gao-Rao Duo plays at 8 p.m. this evening at the Ethical Society of St. Louis (9001 Clayton Road, Ladue). Tickets are $22 to $24. Call 314-567-5566 for tickets, and be sure to visit www.guitarstlouis.net for sound clips and more information.
