Alterman State of Mind

Straw Man, thy nickname is "Liberal." Whew, Straw, it's been a brutal few years, getting called "Liberal" in such lowdown derisive tones, as if that distinguished descriptor were tainted somehow. Time to assume flesh and blood form again, Straw — time to stand up and fight back. Eric Alterman's your buddy in the scrap. Alterman is a columnist for The Nation and a widely published author who's never once ducked the "L" word. He's proud to be a liberal; he even thinks that most Americans are fundamentally liberal as well. His new book, Why We're Liberals: A Political Handbook for Post-Bush America, elaborates on that premise, and he'll be discussing it tonight at 7 p.m. at the Ethical Society of St. Louis (9001 Clayton Road, Richmond Heights). Left Bank Books sponsors the free event; more details can be learned by visiting or calling 314-367-6731.
