And I'm Never Coming Back This Way Again

Jon Cournoyer's luminous collages evoke the classic storybook emotion of triumph tinged with sadness. For his new series, Not Coming Home, Cournoyer reverses the proportions so that the sorrow outweighs the joy. There's nothing overtly maudlin about the work, which continues his use of human figures placed in fields of toys or against ethereal dreamscapes. But now the the palette is more subdued, the figures are adults instead of children, and they're more often looking away from the viewer. The overwhelming feeling is one of something lost, a feeling exacerbated by Cournoyer's use of compass directions as design elements. Childhood is back there somewhere, and Cournoyer is determined to find it once again -- if anyone can rediscover that golden country, it is Mr. Cournoyer. Not Coming Home opens with a free public reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, October 1, at Hoffman LaChance Contemporary (2730 Sutton Boulevard, Maplewood; 314-960-5322 or The show remains up through Saturday, October 30, and the gallery is open Friday and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.
Fridays, Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 1. Continues through Oct. 30, 2010
