April Showers Bring May (Super) Powers

While the first Saturday in May has yet to be recognized as a national holiday, Free Comic Book Day ranks right up there with Christmas as the most wonderful time of the year for comic-book fans. For one day only, participating comic retailers around the country offer absolutely free copies of select comic-book titles to everyone who comes through the door. Star Clipper (6392 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-725-9110) is pulling out all the stops from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with live music from the likes of Supergrunt (local rockers Bunnygrunt performing a superhero-themed set) and Losing Controllers (a video-game-score cover band), and appearances from super-robot Voltron, and Wolverine and the X-Men writer Jason Aaron. And you can count on plenty of free comics -- including special editions from publishers Archie, Dark Horse, DC, Image, Top Shelf and a special comic from Marvel, timed to coincide with the theater release of The Avengers.
