Around the World in 21 Hours

When Ms. Day travels around the world, she has certain things she must do in each country, whether it's catching her favorite local dance troupe's performance in Vietnam, eating a hearty helping of feijoada in Brazil, buying a striking sari in India or exercising during a caber-toss in Scotland. Yes, Ms. Day leads a charmed existence, getting to visit all of these amazing places. Do you want to know her secret? She lives this wonderful life at the annual Festival of Nations in Tower Grove Park, in the section closest to South Grand Boulevard and Arsenal Street. This year the International Institute's world celebration kicks off with a Friday night (July 21) preview party from 6 to 10 p.m. along South Grand Boulevard, just two blocks south of the park. Then, the big party happens on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (July 22 and 23). That's when three stages present dancing and music from everywhere (including Vietnam and Spain); 27 food booths offer delights from places such as Bosnia, Ethiopia and, of course, Brazil; another 27 booths sell Israeli jewelry, Ms. Day's Indian saris, Iranian wares and more; and the World Sports Meadow hosts those Scots (and Day) while they get busy caber-tossing. Admission to this lovely educational festival is free; call the International Institute at 314-773-9090 or visit www.intlinst.org for more information.
