Art Appreciation

If only we all could have as full of a life as local treasure Patricia Degener. Her accomplishments include being a working artist for nearly 50 years, writing award-winning art criticism, and helping to found both the Forum for Contemporary Art (now the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis) and Craft Alliance’s gallery. The Gallery at the Regional Arts Commission (6128 Delmar Boulevard; 314-863-5811 or www.art-stl.com) honors Degener’s artistic contributions with Patricia Degener: A Retrospective, an exhibit curated by Martin Schweig, a photographer who recently celebrated his own retrospective show. The free opening reception for Degener’s exhibit runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 13, giving you plenty of time to peruse her self-described “decorative and amusing” ceramics, setting sculptures and drawings. In addition to the opening event, the artist gives a free talk at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9. The gallery is open daily, and the show remains up through Sunday, May 20.
