Every summer the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard; 314-535-4660 or www.contemporarystl.org) drums up excitement about local art through its City-Wide Open Studios Preview Reception and Tour. These events provide fun, unpretentious, unintimidating ways for us to get to know the art made here at home and meet our artist neighbors behind the work. At the preview reception — which is held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20 — the Contemporary's galleries show off pieces made by people who are opening up their studios for visitors during the tour on Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25. Attend the reception, and you'll be able to check out the work, pick out what suits your taste or what you simply find intriguing, and begin formulating a plan for how you'll pack the most into your day(s) of touring. Admission to both the City-Wide Open Studios tour and reception — with Pi pizza and Schlafly beer! — is free; to learn more check out www.openstudiosonline.org.
