Asylum Street Spankers

6 p.m. Tuesday, July 11. Sheldon Concert Hall (3648 Washington Boulevard)

There are five reasons why the Asylum Street Spankers will rule the world someday. 1) The Austin, Texas, outfit melds a multitude of venerable musical styles into a satisfying sonic stew. 2) The Spankers kick serious booty in concert — and they don't need amps or a PA system to do it. 3) ASS has more red-eyed odes to sticky green bud than Cypress Hill. 4) To mix things up, the group also sings songs about beer. 5) Christian Woman Today magazine once condemned the Spankers for having "absolutely filthy subject matter and lyrics" but still gave props to the group's "exemplary musicianship." Amen to that. This show is part of Vivacadabra, a benefit for local nonprofit Viva Vox. (See page 28 in Night & Day for more information.)
