A community finds its strength in connections and conversations, in taking the time to know our neighbors and understand our history. No neighborhood is an island, and none should be treated as such. In St. Louis, we're fortunate to have hundreds of vibrant communities making up our region -- and we're doubly fortunate when our cultural institutions make it a priority to explore the richness in our own backyards. This is certainly the case with Kirkwood Roots, a new multimedia exhibition at the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or that examines the history of Kirkwood's African American neighborhoods. Join museum staff members David Lobbig and Thomas Sleet for a gallery talk at 1 p.m. this afternoon, and then peruse the fascinating contents of the 1,000-square-foot space. A facilitator from the National Conference for Community and Justice of Metropolitan St. Louis joins the discussion. This event is free, as is admission to Kirkwood Roots, which remains on display through February 28, 2012.
