If Henry Shaw were alive, he'd be 213 years old today, which is pretty good for a Victorian gardener. Would he even recognize his adopted city? Cars, cell phones and that great big Arch would certainly confuse him, but his back yard -- what we call the Missouri Botanical Garden -- would most likely be familiar and comforting with its many trees and plants. And today it would be quite familiar, as the garden celebrates Henry Shaw's birthday with free admission and Victorian entertainments from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Actors wearing period garb are joined by jugglers, stilt walkers and a silhouette artist.
