Balloons Past, Balloons Present

As a wee child, Ms. Day had an opportunity to ride in a hot-air balloon with her grandparents -- but she didn’t take it. Almost immediately after making her decision to stay on the ground, she regretted not going, and she’s remorseful about this choice even today. Day remembers that as a child, she thought invitations to float around in balloons were probably offered relatively frequently and that one day, she wouldn’t be so scared of the flame and so bothered by the heat. Needless to say, a chance to be whisked away to heights unknown in the basket of a balloon has never been presented to Day again -- it seems that was her only opportunity. So when you see her at the Great Forest Park Balloon Race festivities this weekend (Friday and Saturday, September 14 and 15) looking wistfully at the sky with a tear trickling down her cheek, you’ll know why. She’ll silently weep as she admires the illuminated majesty during the Balloon Glow (from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday), and she’ll try to hold it together as the Energizer Hot “Hare” Balloon is launched at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and the rest of the inflated beauties follow shortly after that. If you would like to see a grown woman cry (and check out the rest of the free balloon-race festivities, which include pony rides and a skydiving performance), visit www.greatforestparkballoonrace.com for details and directions.
