Before Destruction, Downtown Swelled with Protesters, Peaceful Action

A peaceful protest drew an estimated 1,000 citizens to police headquarters in downtown St. Louis Sunday, September 17. Protesters held a die-in and were silent for six minutes, commemorating the years that have passed since Anthony Lamar Smith was killed by then-St. Louis officer Jason Stockley. The action also involved a march through the campus of Saint Louis University. The protest ended around 8 p.m., but a smaller group -- an estimated 100 or so people -- continued to march, heading further east into downtown St. Louis. Windows were shattered and flowerpots smashed before police arrested 80 or more people -- and announced, "The police owned the night." The RFT's Theo Welling was there.
