Laumeier Sculpture Park

Some cities, poor schmucks that they are, feel blessed to have a few pieces of art hanging around the public square — a di Suvero here, maybe a Calder there. We in St. Louis can only look on those poor cities and smile. After all, our town houses Laumeier Sculpture Park, which at 105 acres is one of the largest open-air sculpture parks in the nation. From Joseph Havel to Donald Judd (and yes, plenty of hometown fave Ernest Trova) the park, a nonprofit that's free to the public, offers one and all entry into the fantastical world of modern sculpture. The park's mission is to open the world of art to its visitors, and in so doing it offers art classes, several festivals and an art camp for children. What's more, under the inspired leadership of Glen Gentele, it's only getting better: In the next few years Laumeier expects to build a fine arts and education center, which will boost the park's ability to mount indoor shows and enhance its educational component — proving, once again, that the best things in life really are free.
