Best Community Theater Offering

Thirteen months ago Spotlight Productions in Chesterfield mounted a remarkably effective -- at times enthralling -- rendition of the 1997 Tony Award-winning musical Titanic. This August 2003 offering opened too late for inclusion in last year's edition of this issue. But the production, directed by Brad Schwartz, was too good to ignore. The ocean liner itself may have sunk, but everything else about the production soared, especially that huge community-theater cast. When 46 actors joined together to sing Maury Yeston's soaring anthems, they succeeded in drowning out the pejorative notion that community theater = amateur = bad. Not on this outing. Anyone who saw this Titanic experienced a night to remember.
