Best Local Actor

Bobby Miller

2014 may be known in some circles as the Year of the Horse, but for actor Bobby Miller it will forever be known as the Year of Playing Old Jewish Guys. Miller was hilarious in New Jewish Theatre's production of Old Jews Telling Jokes. While handling a cigar he stole the show with lines like: "My wife likes to talk to me during sex. She calls me up and says: 'Nathan, I'm having sex.'" Funny stuff. But it was Miller's turn as a decidedly different Old Jewish Guy — Solomon, the dodgy antiques appraiser in Arthur Miller's The Price — where the actor really shined. In a dazzling supporting-role performance laden with subtle vocal inflections, discreet hand gestures and winding monologues, Miller brought Solomon to aching life in the New Jewish Theatre production, stealing scenes and proving, once again, Stanislavski's old adage that there are no small parts, only small actors.
