Best Mall Sculpture

Jamestown Mall

As if to cover up a small tinge of capitalist guilt, most American malls dedicate a few square feet to the cultured arts. This usually manifests as an ignored sculpture in the center court fountain. When Jamestown Mall opened in 1974, they went full-on hallucinogenic with four ultramodern sculptures for patrons to ignore in their mad rush to Swiss Colony and Chess King. What was originally outrageous now seems exceptionally highbrow. The behemoth fountain sculpture is like Alberto Giacometti abstracted, two undulating stainless steel explosions predate Frank Gehry's architecture and an imposing white stone piece looks like Pablo Picasso crafted a guitar. It's well worth a drive to farthest north county to see a fading mall inadvertently become an art gallery.
