Best Mile of St. Louis

Washington Avenue from Vandeventer to Compton avenues

Start out a couple blocks north of the extravagant Moolah Theatre and start walking along Washington Avenue. You'll hit two of the loudest voices in the city's conversation about current art in the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and the sparse, elegant Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts. Beyond that is the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Washington Avenue, which puts you within feet of three world-class performance venues in the Sheldon, the Fox Theatre and Powell Hall — not to mention the carnivore's dream hamburger at Dooley's. Keep walking, and you'll hit Urban Chestnut Brewery and its brand-new, German-style beer garden with communal seating for a couple hundred. This stretch anchors the blossoming midtown, where energetic businesses and restaurants are moving in on seemingly a monthly basis. And it's home to well over a century of St. Louis' proud architectural heritage, from the 19th-century Third Baptist Church to the Pulitzer, designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who is himself only 70 years old.
