Best Place for a First Date

The Butterfly House

Who doesn't like butterflies? Seriously. Even that noted misanthrope Nabokov loved the delicate, multihued creatures — loved them pinned to a display board, but still. Anyone who balks when you suggest a visit to the Butterfly House in Chesterfield's Faust Park doesn't deserve your time. It's not just a great location for a first date, it's the perfect screening device, too. Assuming your potentially significant other isn't the rare lepidopterophobe, the two of you can spend a pleasant morning or afternoon wandering the paths of the conservatory, examining some 60 butterfly and 150 tropical-plant species. You can even examine dozens of new butterflies as they emerge from their cocoons — just as your new relationship might, soon. At $6, it's cheaper than a movie. And on your way out of the conservatory you have to check each other for stray butterflies, a great excuse for that awkward first kiss.
