Best Place to Live

Southampton

Most people who live in St. Louis are familiar with the better-known neighborhoods. The Loop is a hipster haven. The West End: nice outdoor cafés and a smattering of high(er)brow culture. Soulard: get your debauch on and walk home! Et cetera. All great places to live. But this year we're going the neighborhood-less-traveled route. The Southhampton area (or SoHa as we like to call it) is located at the nexus of the south side's bevy of city parks: Tower Grove, Christy, Carondelet, Willmore, Francis, Lindenwood and Tilles. As reasonable home prices have drawn young couples and families to the area, restaurants, bars, shops and boutiques have sprouted up to serve them. This past summer saw the first Macklind Avenue Days, as well as the first Macklind Avenue 5K, sponsored by Big River Running, which holds weekly runs that start at the shop and meander through the neighborhood to Francis Park. SoHa might not have the Loop's bohemian cachet, the CWE's je ne sais quois or the bare breasts of Soulard. But you can get to all those places from here — if you want to.
