Aboussie Park

When Interstate 55 cut its way through Soulard back in the early 1980s, residents turned the pie-shape parcel of land at 13th and Lynch streets into St. Louis' smallest park. At just four-tenths of an acre, Aboussie Park, named for the onetime leader of the Ninth Ward Democratic Organization, Martie J. "Murph" Aboussie, could easily be mistaken for a side yard of the neighboring Victorian on 13th Street. In fact, strolling every inch of its curving sidewalk — past ferns, pine trees and blooms no bigger than the size of a child's fist — takes only some 188 steps. The smell of the brewery mingles with the scent of flowers, and just beyond the fence is an ever-present reminder of the park's origins: the din of I-55.
